Part of the 23 Things course includes learning about (or revisiting) and reflecting on the habits necessary for lifelong learning. These are:
- having a goal
- taking responsibility for your learning
- considering problems as challenges
- having confidence in your learning abilities
- creating a learning toolbox
- utilising technology
- teaching and/or mentoring others; and
- playing.
As a graduate of a post-grad library course that emphasised lifelong learning and self-reflection, none of this is new to me. And in my professional life I myself have spent a lot of time doing a lot of, if not all of, the above. I have worked in a lot of different library and information environments, and have constantly been striving to learn from others and teach myself new skills.
Of these “7 1/2″ habits, I would say the easiest one for me is taking responsibility for my learning. I do that every day. The hardest is probably playing – I have a tendency to take things too seriously.
